A vineyard on the escarpment.

Vinous Australis was founded in 2005 by winemaker Peter Flewellyn and his family, high on the steep, north-facing slopes of the Willunga Escarpment — where quartzite outcrops break through limestone and cool evening breezes roll in off the Gulf St Vincent. It is a demanding place to grow wine, and that is exactly the point: poor soils and hard-won fruit give small bunches of remarkable depth.

We hand-prune and hand-harvest, picking each block only when flavour reaches its peak, then do less in the winery, not more — open fermenters, gentle basket-pressing and long, unhurried maturation in oak. The result is wine that speaks plainly of where it comes from: the Angustum range for the cellar, and Sandbar Estate for the everyday table.
